In 1999, representatives from zoos across Canada met at Northern Alberta Institue of Technology (NAIT) to participate in a competency pofile development workshop to identify the skills required of a zookeeper. The workshop was a result of the recognition that the zookeeping profession needed to standardize its training methods and practices. The Zoo Technology Program is a competency-based learning program. The program is made possible through a partnership between the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA), ABES2000 Ltd. and NAIT. NAIT has developed the curricula for the zookeeping industry, customized to meet the varied needs of industry. Upon successful completion of each course a certificate will be issued. A "Zoo Technology Program" certificate will be awared when all 10 courses are completed. Don
